The year was 1959 and Melvin and Henrietta Pierce purchased their first home which was fueled by oil heat, a source of heating not widely used in Western Sullivan County at that time. Employed by the Sullivan County Department of Public Works as a truck driver, Melvin made the decision to purchase his first oil truck and begin a business which would bring additional income while also selling a product needed to heat his own residence. Business expanded over the years and it was in the mid 1960’s that Melvin began work for the US Postal Service. Over the next 30 years, he would deliver mail in the morning, while supplying his customers with oil and kerosene during the afternoon.

1985 brought about the addition of the propane aspect of the business. A local supplier specializing in home cooking accounts was going out of business and having received inquiries regarding this service Cochecton Oil began servicing customers with LP. Ten years later with Melvin’s health declining, Peter and Norma Pierce incorporated the business and began operating as a full- time endeavor, expanding both the oil and propane and continue to so today many years later.

2008 was an interesting year for the energy industry as prices skyrocketed to over $4.00 per gallon. It was then that Cochecton Oil constructed the propane bulk storage plant on premise and purchased the first “bobtail” delivery truck to begin phasing out the exchange LP bottle business.

Cochecton Oil and Propane continues to grow with the help of their children and dedicated employees. Our eldest son, Michael, who has served in the US ARMY and continues to serve in the National Guard along with working full-time in law enforcement continues to help out part time in the third-generation family business. After completing his Associates Degree in Business Management from Sullivan County Community College, 2017 brought the addition of our youngest son, Patrick to the business full-time. With his hard work and focus, Cochecton Oil has grown tremendously, most recently completing the building project for the new office of Cochecton Oil and Propane.

Looking forward to forging ahead in the energy industry and having the opportunity to be your supplier while still maintaining the personal service we pride ourselves on.

Thank you for taking the time to read our story.
